Synopsis: Nimona was forced to take on her father’s debts with the Trust — a society whose members wield forbidden magic. The Trust are located underground in the city ruled by a king with no magic of his own.

To pay off her father’s debt, Nimona gets a task that endangers her life. She is pretty much on her own, but still she sets out to do what will hopefully gain her her freedom back.

My thoughts:

I did enjoy the book, not least because it was very well read by Mary Jane Wells.

The world is fascinating, if a bit vague.

I didn’t get a very clear picture of this world, be it underground, or above ground.

There seem to be places outside the city where one could be safe, but even that is not proven.

Our heroine is like any youngster confronted with a similar situation: stubborn, loyal to her friends whom she doesn’t want to endanger, but without whose help she can’t possibly survive.

Along the way she falls for the one person who might be able to help her get rid of that contract, but who is in danger himself.

I liked the characters, and the story, but feel that more could have been described, because I didn’t get a very clear picture of the environs.

That said, it is not about the environs, but about friendship and loyalty, and it kept me listening till the ending. It is a really sweet read that makes you want for more.

About the author: Melissa Wright

Melissa is the author of more than a dozen YA and fantasy novels including The Frey Saga and BETWEEN INK AND SHADOWS. When not writing she can generally be found talking about a book, painting something from a book, or tucked between headphones listening to a book. It’s kind of a theme. She loves reasonable heroines in unreasonable situations, noble–if brooding–heroes, slow burn and sweet kisses, a lot of havoc, and a little magic.
